who runs the farm?
it’s a. hi. it’s really me, myself, and i. i like to joke that my husband is my ranch hand. i primarily handle all the animals and the upkeep while he focuses on building and occasionally helping with the daily chores.
ducks were his idea as i’ve said in another blog post, but, everything else was mine and in full force. we started with just five ducklings, then i decided to get two more. than I found two ducks in a chick container and i begged him to take them home because i felt so bad. so we had nine. i told him i planned to get chickens so we could process our own meat. i got ten hens of two breeds. that was the beginning of losing animals. oh boy. chickens bring predators and are such an easy prey… anyways. i picked up three free roosters one day and then told him we’d be processing them. he looked at me and said, “what? when and how?”. i looked back at him and said i watched a video and this seems to be the easiest way, so we’ll do it this way. we knocked it out and determined how we wanted to go about processing our own one day. it was a fantastic learning experience and wasn’t that difficult.
i’ve handled burying many ducklings and chicks/chickens. i do the research for each breed and what ever potential breeds i want to bring in based on several factors. for example: i wanted all our birds to be a dual purpose. one, so we could have great egg layers and two, if we had any mean tempered or non great egg layers, we could feed them until we process. it is the same idea for any breed of animal we get unless it’s just an animal we want for pets. this would be the myotonic fainting goats. when they get too old, those will retire to the freezer.
on top of handling all the main chores, egg gathering, feed orders and recipes, hoof trimmings and more, i handle the sick cases. my husband, alex, is such a trooper throughout our whole farming life though. if i ask for help, he’s always gonna help. he will occasionally help me trim the hooves, help get medications ready for me, listen to me rant about various random things he has no clue about and so much more.
this is primarily why if you ask him, he won’t know much of the breeds or information. he’ll know we have chickens, goats, ducks, dogs, cats, and a turtle. truly, he will probably end up forgetting something too. we love him though!
thank you for supporting our farm and loving our animals as much as us!
