recipes: baked apple oat crumble
fall is my second favorite season. i spent a good chunk of my life in the midwest where we eat chili with cinnamon rolls. (do NOT knock this till you try it, and beans and meat belong in chili, we can fight about this later). anywho, baked apples were also a thing and i have rarely had them since i moved down to texas. i clearly forget that i have the free will to make them any time i want because well, i am an adult and i have the means to go buy an apple if i wanted. a baked apple is the most accurate representation of fall for me. let’s set the scene. fall is cozy, warm colors, vivid, you can feel the crisp in the air, you can sense the sweetness of the world after it’s rained. it is a whole fuckin’ vibe. that is literally a a baked apple. coziness, warmth and natural sweetness.
let’s get to that feeling that you can whip up in less than an hour. you can find a downloadable recipe card here.
RECIPE
*apple filling
about 2-3 pounds of apples (your choice. my favorites are honey crisp, cosmic crisp or ambrosia)
1/2 cup of sugar
1/2 tbsp of molasses (or omit these and use 1/2 cup of brown sugar)
1/2 tbsp of cinnamon
1/2 tsp of nutmeg
1/4 tsp of allspice (optional)
4 tbsp of butter
1/2 tsp of salt
2 tbsp of flour
*oat crumble
3/4 cup of oats
1/2 tbsp of cinnamon
1/2 tsp of nutmeg
2 tbsp of brown sugar
1 tbsp of butter
DIRECTIONS
adding the oat crumble to the prepped apples.
preheat oven to 375
wash, peel and dice up your apples (honestly, this part is really up to you on how you want them. i prefer peeled apples these days, but i will also make this with peels sometimes. you can slice them too)
in a dish, add about 3-4 tbsp of butter (we only use unsalted)
while prepping the apples, let your butter melt in your dish in the oven
when the apples are done being prepped and the butter is melted, add in your apples to the pan.
add your sugar, molasses (or just brown sugar), bit of salt, cinnamon, tad of nutmeg. get that all mixed in.
sprinkle your flour on top and mix that in as well.
take your oats and mix in some cinnamon and a tad of sugar.
toss that on top of your apples.
bake for 15-20 minutes . apples should be soft but still have a slight crunch.
remove from the oven and mix your oats in with the apples, bake for another 10-15 minutes so the oats can become softer. (you can leave it to where your oats are still a little crunchy if you prefer)
you can enjoy this on it’s on OR you can grab some vanilla ice cream and plop it on top. DELISH.
you can see the variations that you can create with this!
diced apple variation
the diced apples were slightly crunchier while having crunchier oats. the diced will be great for meal prepping.
sliced apple variation
the sliced apples were more tender and the oats were softer. the sliced apples are great for a ready to go dessert.
