final 8 - the goats
we are officially down to our final eight goats. (including dusty but he’s gonna be culled)
we now have three females, our wether and three males.
oreo aka mama, piper and s’mores.
winston, our puppy dog.
freddie, orion and sully.
we may swap out females later down the road but we’re happy with who we have left! we have started playing with the idea of who we want to pair for kids. s’mores and orion is our hope, piper and sully and then freddie and oreo. this would give us a good range of colors and horned babies. the outcome will be nigerian dwarf/myotonic goats. this also means all the kids would have a chance of having the fainting gene.
ours girls are in heat right now and we are seeing where the natural interest is, but the girls choose someone new every day. overall, we are excited with the bunch we have and the possibilities.
we haven’t decided when we will cull dusty, but he’s nearing one year old. if i had to guess, he’ll be culled before christmas. i plan to tan the hide and see if we can use it for various things and im very eager for that part.
let’s talk personalities:
oreo (really shows itself): fierce mama, an incredible protector. a bit standoffish, but she was coming around before we got two more females.
piper (my brown eyed brown girl): sweet, loving girl on her own terms. an older mama who only cares for her own kids. only skittish when you quickly approach her or spook her.
s’mores (the prettiest blue eyed girl): honestly, a bitch. she’s pretty, but mean to everyone. she beats up oreo and is a bad influence on piper. also doesn’t care for other kids that aren’t her own and tries to beat up winston.
winston (our tricolored and only horned dude): our sole wether. a spunk of straight up puppy syndrome. the second best goat we’ve ever had and one we’re quite literally never getting rid of. (rest in love, linus)
freddie(my tan dude): my boy. sweet as can be, but linus passing definitely altered him and he’s still coming back around. he’s an escape artist who doesn’t care if he’s alone within the vicinity of others.
orion (tan with tons of moonspots): my mom’s special pick goat. this boy can be skittish but he only really cares about food. if you have food, he’ll jump on you and take pets.
sully (primarily black): this big guy is the chillest of all the goats we have. he’s the definition of unproblematic. independent, doesn’t care for pets, but is our softest goat so it’s heartbreaking.
dusty (primarily white): he’s good enough for food. he’s kind of a dick. overly eager when girls are in heat too.
excited for what’s to come from this bunch.
here’s some new recent pictures of them in their rotational areas.
