recipes: brown sugar poptarts

brown sugar poptarts. not a necessity, but a huge want, am i right?

what you’ll need:

flour and ingredient layout

(dough)

• 2 1/4 cups of flour

• 1/4 cup of sugar

• 1 teaspoon of salt

• 2 sticks of butter (cubed)

• 1/4 to 1/2 cup cold water

(filling)

• 1 cup of brown sugar

• 1/2 tsp salt

• 1 1/2 tbsp flour

(egg wash: optional)

• egg

• 2 tsp water

OR

• splash of heavy cream

• 2 tsp water

(glaze)

• 2 cups of powdered sugar

• 2 to 3 tbsp of milk

• 1 tbsp of corn syrup

• 1 tbsp of vanilla

to begin:

(dough)

• cube the COLD butter

• combine the dry ingredients.

• add the cubed butter into the dry ingredients and mix until it creates crumbles

• once it creates crumbles, add the cold water in. one tbsp at a time

> set in the fridge while you work on the filling <

(filling)

• combine everything

*tip: if you are using cane sugar, i highly recommend melting the sugar just a tad. it doesn’t melt down the same way commercial sugar does*

> pull dough out <

• roll out your dough to be about 1/8” thick (you need this thinner if you want the thickness of a regular poptart. i did about 1/4” thick and they were perfect for us, i would have just added more filling)

• roll out as large as you can so you can cut out the max amount of rectangles at once. (you want the rectangles to be about 2”x4”, roughly)

• once cut out, put filling in the center of about half of them. then take an egg wash and line the edges before you put your top dough on to keep it together.

• take a fork and press the edges down

• egg wash the edges or the whole poptart if you wish

• bake for 23-25 minutes at 375°.

(glaze)

• combine everything

• glaze when poptarts are fully cooled off

overview

these are a process of love & rather quick if you have no interruptions… (i know, nearly impossible) nonetheless, i intend to work these into a monthly prep so we can have some ready to go in the freezer.

you can freeze these, but freeze them unglazed. i like to throw them in the microwave for 10-20 seconds to enjoy them warm.

i hope y’all enjoy these as much as we did. i’ll work on adding the apple pie poptarts next! they are a slight variation of these.
